Abstract

Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the association between serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and the metabolic syndrome (MS) in Korean adolescents.

Methods: Data were obtained from 1,372 students aged 12~13y with normal liver functions of 7 middle schools in a district of Gwang-ju. Serum GGT, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), body mass index(BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting glucose and lipid profiles were measured. MS was defined by criteria analogous to ATP ¥² as 3 of the following: 1) fasting triglycerides 100 mg/dL, 2) HDL-cholesterol <50 mg/dL, 3) fasting glucose 110 mg/dL, 4) waist circumference >75th percentile for age and gender, and 5) systolic blood pressure >90th percentile for gender, age, and height. GGT quartiles were formed in assessing the likelihood of MS in logistic regression models that controlled for confounders such as sex, overweight and serum ALT.

Results: The prevalence of MS was 5.2% (5.6% for male and 4.9% for female). The MS and its components were significantly related to increased serum GGT level except for HDL-cholesterol and fasting glucose. After the adjustment for sex, overweight and serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), the association with the MS was attenuated, but the OR for MS was 2.06 (95% Confidence Interval: 1.02~4.17) in the highest compared with the lowest quartile of serum GGT.

Conclusions: This study shows that serum GGT level, even within its normal range, is associated with the MS in Korean adolescents.
